Stay Protected While Skiing This Christmas

19 December 2019

It is that time of year again… FINALLY! The time when hot chocolate is abundant, the lights are the brightest, the carolers are out, and above all, the streets are paved white with SNOW! Why not take advantage of one of the best winter sports this season and take a Holiday skiing1 trip? The United States and Canada are excellent for a short vacation and have amazing ski resorts that accommodate the beginners to the experts. If you are able to take a longer Holiday vacation, the European Alps are also a great choice.

Nothing beats the thrill of the cold wind on your face enjoying the beautiful view from above.  However, according to the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA)2, over the past 10 years, there has been an average of 41.5 people who have died skiing or snowboarding each year, as well  as serious injuries of about 44.7 people per year (paralysis, serious head injuries and other serious injuries) and that these sports have a fatality rate of 1.06 per million visits.

Hopefully, you do not doubt the importance of purchasing a travel protection plan.  A travel protection plan is important to have not just for skiing trips but for all domestic and international travel. AXA offers travel protection plans which include travel insurance AND travel assistance services.

eligible claims, you will be reimbursed for medical costs incurred as a result of an accidental injury, however this is only part of the benefit of having a travel protection plan.  The other part includes access to assistance services. AXA has agents available 24 hours a day and seven days a week, ready to provide referrals to nearby hospitals, as well as any last minute recommendations and reservations you may need during your trip.

If you have the opportunity to travel during the December Holidays, do it! It is a perfect time to get to see how different cities and countries celebrate all of the many festivities that occur during the month of December. Keep in mind that most people do seek to travel during this time of year.  See below for December travel tips:

  1. Book your travel well in advance: December is considered a high travel season month, especially during the last two weeks, so it is essential that you purchase your plane tickets, hotel reservations, and rental cars in advance.

  1. Arrive early for your flight: airports are full during this time of the year and security lines may be longer than usual. For the day of travel, it is essential to calculate your time and arrive well in advance. We recommend 3-4 hours prior for international flights and 2-3 hours prior for domestic flights.

  1. Keep an eye on your luggage: as during any trip, it is important that you pack only the necessities, this is especially important during this time of the year because planes are usually overbooked and airlines might require you to check-in your carry-on bags. It is important to never lose sight of your suitcase because the risk of theft or loss is usually higher at this time of the year.
  2. Be patient: even though you have everything planned, during this time of year, it is inevitable to experience longer waits and large crowds of people, so take advantage of that additional time with your loved ones. Breathe, think positive and enjoy the Holidays in the company of your loved ones.

At AXA, we want you to enjoy your Christmas and New Year's Eve Holidays, so purchase your travel protection plan now and enjoy every moment in the company of your loved ones.

1 AXA’s travel protection plans exclude coverage for injuries sustained as a result of extreme skiing or other extreme sports. Please review the travel plan document available at  for further information.
