Where to go in Iceland?

Things to do in Iceland| AXA Travel Insurance

Iceland has so much to offer travelers, including having one of the lowest crime rates, 100% adult literacy rate, more trees per capita than any other country in Europe, and best of all you can see the Auroras Borealis. Surprisingly, this country is not a popular travel destination.

Do you need a Visa to visit Iceland?

No Visa is required to enter Iceland for US citizens if you are traveling for less than 90 days. However, you are required to have a passport that is valid for at least three months beyond your planned date of departure.[1]

Do I need vaccinations to enter Iceland?

Travelers do not need any special vaccinations to travel to Iceland, however we do ask you to consider obtaining a travel protection plan. Iceland does not provide free medical services for tourists.

At AXA Assistance USA Inc., we have travel protection plans that will help protect you while you travel within Iceland. Travel protection in the event of hospitalization, medical transfers, dental emergencies, doctors’ visits, and repatriation are among many of the benefits offered on these plans.

When is the best time to travel to Iceland?

It depends on what you want to see during your trip. Summer in Iceland consist of almost 24 hours of daylight. During the winter months, there are very few hours of daylight. The high season is considered to be from mid-June to August due to the longer days.

October to April are considered to be low season months because the climate is more extreme, the nights are very long, and the cold is quite strong. It is the best time for winter activities including visiting glaciers, ice caves and to see the auroras borealis!

What are Iceland's must-see?

Northern Lights or the auroras borealis is at the top of our list. Iceland has the best sighting of this phenomenon because of its source of solar activity and geocentric areas that are ideal for observing

them more easily. The best months are from September to March. You can look up the forecasted intensity yourself from the Meteorological Office to know which day to try to see them more clearly.

Glaciers: Iceland is one of the countries in Europe with the largest glacier mass in the world. We suggest visiting Vatnajökull, Langjökull and Myrdalsjökull, the three main and most beautiful glaciers in this region. One of our favorites is Fimmvorduhals, which is an area of glaciers that has fissures from which lava usually gushes turning snow into steam, quite a spectacle!

  • Waterfalls: Iceland  has several that really are a spectacle. We suggest Dettifoss, Skogarfoss, Seljalandsfoss, Godafoss, Hengifoss or Bruarfoss waterfalls.
  • Landscapes: Iceland possesses landscapes so beautiful that they seem from another planet. Examples include the black coast of Vik, the glacier lagoon Jokulsarlon or the famous Boilers in turquoise that can only be appreciated a couple of months out of the year.
  • Thermal waters: If you are already going to cross to the other side of the world you have to get into the thermal waters of Iceland. We are sure you have seen pictures of the most famous "Blue Lagoon" and let me tell you, the pictures do not do justice to how beautiful this place is.
  • Geysers: Geyeir and Strokkur are the most popular, being the last active geysers in this country. If you visit this beautiful natural phenomenon you can expect an eruption around every 5-10 minutes.

The reality is that we could write a complete book on all the places and incredible things that you can find in this country however, we believe that the best thing is to experience these sites with your own eyes. We encourage you to visit one of the most beautiful countries on our planet.

Don't forget to purchase your AXA travel protection plan so you can enjoy your holidays in every way.
