After many years of human activity on earth, we have come to the realization that our actions have negative consequences. There is no way to deny it we are hurting our planet. The CO2 we are emitting is staying inside the earth’s atmosphere, and causing a "greenhouse effect" that affects all living creatures that inhabit the third planet from the sun, Earth.
However, is global warming real? Well, according to NASA, the average surface temperature of the planet has risen by about 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit (0.9 degrees Celsius) since the end of the 19th century. Most of the rise in temperature has occurred within the last 35 years. In addition, climate experts report that Greenland has lost an average of 286 billion tons of ice a year from 1993 to 2016, sea levels are rising, and oceans are acidifying, among many other measurable consequences.¹
The earth is everyone's responsibility; we can start by making small changes in our day-to-day lives that will eventually create a large impact. Let us start by taking care of our oceans. We can do this by avoiding plasticized products like bags, straws and all plastic containers. If possible, avoid smoking, cigarette butts are one of the biggest pollutants of our oceans. Recycle and support the green areas in your community.
At AXA we are committed to saving our planet, that is why we are providing you with a few tips to become an eco-friendly traveler!
1. Your luggage
Travel light, just take what you need and this will help spend less energy when transporting our belongings.
2. Saving Water
Take quick showers, turn off the faucet when you brush your teeth, change sheets and towels only when necessary.
Get to know your next destination by foot! Not renting a car can help you save money on your trip as well as take care of the planet. You will get to know the cities better and see different landscapes. If you need to make longer journeys, another and more ecological option is to use a bicycle or public transport.
Do not throw garbage on the ground! Use recycling bins when possible and bring a reusable water bottle to generate less waste. If you go to the beach, bring a bag with you to dispose of your waste.
Look for eco-friendly hotels; try to use the minimum amount of energy possible. Do not leave the air conditioning or lights on if you are not there, also do not forget to unplug your chargers when you are not using them.
Seek to consume products that are not pre-packaged, consume local foods! If you are staying at an "all inclusive" hotel consume only what you really are going to eat, do not waste food.
Look for hotels that care about the environment. Many “Green” options that have a low-consumption rate of electricity, use organic products, water filters, solar energy, as well as promote recycling campaigns to protect their local environment. If you are interested, you can look for a hotel that specifically has a Green Globe certification.
