Getting Medical Help While at Sea With AXA
When you're cruising, onboard medical teams can handle minor issues, but more serious conditions often require off-ship care. Additionally, many health plans, including Medicare, typically do not cover care received outside the U.S. or while at sea.
With AXA’s travel protection plans, you can get covered for eligible emergency medical expenses during your cruise. This includes care from the ship’s medical staff or treatment at a local facility in a port city.
Here’s how we can help during a medical issue on your cruise:
Covering eligible treatment provided by the ship’s medical team
Reimbursing costs for care received at a clinic or hospital in the port
Arranging and covering transport to the nearest suitable facility when medically necessary
With AXA, you don’t have to manage medical challenges during your cruise alone.

FAQs About Cruise Travel Insurance
What is cruise travel insurance?
Cruise travel insurance includes a set of benefits that help address the specific risks associated with cruise vacations. These benefits can assist with unexpected disruptions that occur before or during your trip, such as needing to cancel your cruise for a covered reason, becoming ill while at sea, or losing baggage while traveling. Unlike many standard health plans or Medicare, which often do not cover medical care received outside the U.S. or on international waters, this coverage helps fill those gaps. It can be especially helpful when visiting multiple countries or traveling to remote areas where access to medical care is limited.
Is medical treatment covered while I’m on the ship?
AXA’s travel protection plans may include emergency medical expense benefits that can help pay for eligible treatment if you get sick or injured during your cruise. This can apply to care provided by the ship’s medical staff, as well as treatment at a local clinic or hospital when you dock. While ships have onboard doctors and nurses, more serious conditions often require off-ship care or even emergency evacuation. These medical services can be costly and are often not covered by Medicare or other domestic health plans. Having travel insurance can help reduce the financial burden of accessing care while abroad or at sea.
What if I miss my cruise due to a flight delay?
If a covered travel delay causes you to miss your cruise departure, AXA’s travel protection plans include missed connection benefits. These can help reimburse additional transportation or lodging costs needed to catch up with your cruise at a later port. For example, if your flight into the cruise’s departure city is delayed long enough that you miss boarding, your travel insurance plan can help cover the cost of a new flight to the next scheduled port stop. The delay must meet the conditions outlined in your plan, such as a required minimum length of delay and documentation of the reason for the disruption.
Can I get coverage if I have a pre-existing condition?
Yes, if you qualify for a waiver of the pre-existing condition exclusion, your travel insurance could cover eligible medical expenses related to a pre-existing condition. To qualify, you generally need to purchase your plan within a certain number of days from your initial trip payment, be medically able to travel at the time of purchase, and meet the plan’s look-back period requirements.
The look-back period is the number of days before purchasing the plan that the insurer will review your medical history. If the waiver applies, your condition is treated the same as any new illness during the trip, allowing you to file claims for eligible expenses if your condition flares up.
What happens if my cruise itinerary changes?
Cruise itineraries can change due to severe weather, port closures, or mechanical issues with the ship. These changes can result in skipped destinations, shortened cruise durations, or delays returning home. If the change is caused by a covered reason under your plan, AXA’s travel protection plans help reimburse unused, non-refundable expenses, such as prepaid shore excursions or hotel stays at affected ports.
In more serious cases, such as needing to leave the cruise early due to illness or a family emergency, trip interruption benefits can help with the cost of return travel and lost cruise days. This type of protection can be especially important when traveling to multiple international destinations where sudden changes are harder to navigate on your own.
Can I cancel my cruise for any reason?
The Explorer Select and Explorer Elite from AXA Travel Protection offer an optional Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) benefit, available for an additional cost. This benefit allows you to cancel your cruise for a reason not listed under standard trip cancellation coverage. To qualify, you must meet certain conditions, such as purchasing the plan within a specified time after your initial trip payment and insuring the full trip cost. If eligible, CFAR can reimburse a portion of your prepaid, non-refundable expenses. The percentage reimbursed and other terms depend on the specific plan details.
Ready to Protect Your Cruise Plans?
Even well-planned cruises can face unexpected changes. AXA’s travel insurance benefits and non-insurance assistance services are designed to support travelers at sea and in port.
