Many travelers think that a state issued driver’s license is acceptable for driving abroad. However, in some countries, car rental companies will ask for more than your driver’s license and passport. You may also be required to have an International Driving Permit (IDP).
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a certificate that allows you to drive a vehicle in another country as long as you have a valid driver’s license issued by your country of residence. It is recognized as a valid form of identification in many countries as well as by many major car rental companies internationally. The permit can also be translated into several languages including Spanish, French, and Portuguese.
The information needed to apply for the IDP includes:
- Completion of the permit application
- Two identical original passport type photos (2x2)
- A valid United States issued driver's license
- Payment of permit fee
To obtain additional information and apply for the IDP please visit the American Automobile Association (AAA) website at: https://www.aaa.com/vacation/idpf.html or the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA): http://aataidp.com for additional information. You should also check the specific driver’s license requirements of the country you are visiting before you travel.
