Exploring the Caribbean by Cruise?

Missed departures, itinerary changes, and travel delays can affect cruise vacations. See how AXA benefits may help protect your trip before and after embarkation.

Traveling to the Caribbean… What You Must Know

A few details that are specific to Caribbean travel and worth considering when choosing a plan.

Hurricane Season

Hurricane season runs from June through November, with peak activity between August and October. Covered weather-related cancellations or interruptions may be eligible for benefits under your plan, subject to plan terms and definitions.

US Health Insurance Is Typically Not Accepted

Most Caribbean destinations do not accept US health insurance or Medicare at private medical facilities. Emergency Medical benefits may help cover eligible medical expenses during your trip.

Cruise Travel Considerations

Many Caribbean vacations involve cruises with multiple port stops. Eligible cruise itineraries may be covered under a single plan, subject to plan terms, conditions, and destination eligibility.

Purchasing Early May Expand Your Options

Some benefits are only available when you purchase within a specified period after your initial trip deposit. Buying early may help preserve valuable coverage options.

FAQs About Travel Insurance for the Caribbean

Does US health insurance work in the Caribbean?

Many Caribbean healthcare providers require payment at the time services are rendered and may not directly bill US health insurance plans, including Medicare. Travelers who require medical care at private facilities in destinations such as Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, and Aruba may need to pay out of pocket at the time of service.

Some US credit card travel benefits include limited medical coverage, but limits are often low relative to the actual cost of inpatient care or emergency treatment abroad. AXA's Emergency Accident and Sickness Medical benefit may help cover eligible costs incurred during your trip, subject to your plan's terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions.

Does travel insurance cover hurricane-related cancellations in the Caribbean?

It depends on the circumstances and timing of purchase. If you purchase a plan before a tropical storm or hurricane is named, and the storm subsequently forces cancellation of your trip for a covered reason such as your destination becoming uninhabitable or your airline canceling flights, your Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption benefit may apply. Once a storm is named, it is generally considered a foreseeable event, and plans purchased after that point typically will not cover losses related to that specific storm. This makes the timing of purchase important for Caribbean travel during hurricane season. Review your plan document for specific covered reasons and definitions before purchasing.

Does travel insurance cover cruise trips in the Caribbean?

Eligible cruise itineraries, including multi-island Caribbean cruises, may be covered under a single AXA Travel Protection Plan, subject to plan terms, conditions, and destination eligibility. A separate plan for each port of call is generally not required.

Several plan benefits are particularly relevant to cruise travel: the Missed Connection benefit may apply if a covered delay causes you to miss your ship's departure; the Trip Interruption benefit may apply if you need to disembark early due to a covered reason; and the Baggage Delay benefit may apply if your luggage does not arrive in time for embarkation. Cruise coverage is subject to plan terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions.

When is the best time to buy travel insurance for the Caribbean?

As soon as you make your first trip deposit. Two time-sensitive benefits are only available within a specified window from your initial deposit date: the pre-existing condition waiver, which may waive the standard pre-existing condition exclusion if eligibility requirements are met, and Cancel for Any Reason, an optional benefit that may reimburse up to 75% of non-refundable trip costs. For Caribbean travel booked during or near hurricane season, purchasing early also ensures that any storm named after your purchase date is potentially within your coverage window, subject to plan terms. Most AXA plans can be purchased up to the day before your departure, but waiting limits your benefit options.

Do I need a separate plan for each Caribbean island on a multi-stop trip?

Eligible multi-island itineraries may be covered under a single AXA Travel Protection Plan, subject to plan terms, conditions, and destination eligibility. Whether you are flying between islands independently, on a cruise with multiple port calls, or combining a resort stay with an island-hopping leg, one plan covers the full trip. Refer to your plan document for eligibility details and any destination-specific terms.

Does travel insurance cover emergency medical evacuation from a Caribbean island?

Emergency Medical Evacuation benefits may help cover the cost of medically necessary transportation to the nearest appropriate medical facility if local treatment is unavailable. Benefits, limits, and eligibility requirements vary by plan. Review your plan document for complete details.

What is Cancel for Any Reason, and does it cover hurricane concerns?

Where available and eligibility requirements are met, Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) is an optional benefit on Explorer Select and Explorer Elite plans. It may reimburse up to 75% of your prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if you cancel for a reason not otherwise covered under standard Trip Cancellation, including personal concerns about weather, even if no travel advisory or official storm warning has been issued.

To qualify, you must purchase the CFAR add-on at the time of plan purchase (not afterward), within the required timeframe from your initial trip deposit, and cancel at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure. Additional plan cost applies.

What happens if my checked luggage doesn't arrive on a Caribbean island?

AXA Travel Protection Plans include a Baggage Delay benefit that may reimburse you for essential items such as clothing, toiletries, and other necessities if your checked luggage is delayed beyond a qualifying number of hours. The delay threshold and per-day reimbursement limit vary by plan, so review your specific plan document before travel. If your luggage is permanently lost or stolen rather than delayed, the Baggage and Personal Effects benefit may apply instead, subject to its own terms and limits. Keep all documentation from the airline, including the Property Irregularity Report (PIR) filed at the airport, as this will be required when filing a claim.

What should I do if I need medical care while in the Caribbean?

Contact AXA Assistance USA, Inc. using the hotline number provided in your plan documentation as early as possible. For non-emergency situations, AXA Assistance can help identify appropriate local medical providers. For emergencies requiring evacuation or repatriation, AXA Assistance USA, Inc. coordinates those services do not arrange medical transport independently, as unauthorized arrangements may not be covered. Keep itemized receipts and medical records for all treatment received, as these will be required when submitting a medical claim. Review your plan document before travel so you understand what steps are required and which benefit limits apply to your situation.
