What is Accidental Death and Dismemberment?
Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) is a travel insurance benefit that may provide a benefit if a covered traveler dies or experiences certain permanent injuries, such as the loss of a limb, sight, speech, or hearing, as a result of a covered accident during a trip. Benefits, covered losses, and exclusions are defined in the plan document, and benefit amounts may vary based on the type and severity of the loss.
AD&D benefits apply only to losses caused directly by a covered accident and typically do not apply to losses resulting from illness or non-covered events. Coverage is subject to specific conditions, limitations, and exclusions outlined in the plan, and not all accidents or injuries may be eligible for a benefit.

When Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) May Apply
Accidental Death and Dismemberment may apply when a traveler experiences a sudden and unexpected accident during their trip that results in a specific covered loss. Typical situations include:
A fatal injury caused directly by a covered accident while traveling
An accident that results in the permanent loss of a limb, sight, speech, hearing, or specific digits, as defined in the plan document
A serious accident where the resulting injury leads to a covered loss within the timeframe specified by the policy
This benefit may provide a payment based on the type of covered loss sustained, subject to the terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions outlined in the plan document. Events that do not result in a qualifying loss, or that are excluded under the policy, do not trigger coverage.

FAQs About Accidental Death and Dismemberment
How is the benefit amount determined if multiple losses occur from the same accident?
If a single accident causes more than one type of covered loss, only the largest applicable benefit is paid. For example, if a loss results in both the permanent loss of a hand and sight in one eye, the benefit will be calculated using the higher applicable percentage. Total payments for all losses from the same accident cannot exceed 100% of the Maximum Benefit Amount listed in the Schedule of Benefits.
What is the timeframe for a loss to qualify for AD&D coverage?
To qualify for a benefit, the loss must occur within 181 days of the accident that caused the injury. Additionally, the accident must happen while you are on your covered trip. Losses occurring outside this period, or before or after the trip, are not eligible.
Are children eligible for AD&D benefits?
Yes. Children under the age of 26 who are primarily dependent on you for support and maintenance are included under AD&D coverage. This ensures that dependent children traveling with you can receive benefits if they experience a covered loss. Age limits may vary for other benefits as noted in the plan document.
Can business partners traveling with me be covered?
Business partners who are actively involved in the daily management of your business and are traveling with you may be eligible for coverage, provided the plan terms are met. This allows coverage for partners whose travel is directly related to business operations and included in the purchased plan.
How does AD&D coverage interact with other travel benefits?
AD&D benefits are separate from other travel benefits and do not duplicate payments under the policy. For example, losses covered under baggage and personal effects or cancellation penalties are handled independently. This ensures that payments for accidental loss are distinct from reimbursements for other travel-related expenses.
